Which Middle and High School Comes After This Elementary School? Will Classmates Move Up Together?

Which middle and high school follows a given elementary school depends on three different boundary maps, and you cannot infer it from the elementary school alone. Carmel Valley's elementary schools belong to Del Mar Union and Solana Beach, while middle and high school belong to San Dieguito Union High. The middle schools are Carmel Valley Middle and Pacific Trails Middle, and the high schools are Torrey Pines and Canyon Crest Academy. Each level's boundary is drawn separately, so the path has to be checked level by level.

Start with the Solana Beach path, which is the most unusual. Carmel Creek takes kindergarten through 3rd grade, and after 3rd grade children move to Solana Pacific for 4th through 6th grade, then to middle school after 6th grade. Solana Highlands used to be kindergarten through 3rd grade too, but after the pandemic it went back to kindergarten through 6th grade, and now at 4th grade children can choose Solana Pacific or stay at Highlands. In other words, even in elementary school, a Solana Beach child may change schools once, then change again for middle school.

Del Mar Union is simpler. All seven elementary schools are full kindergarten through 6th grade, so a child can finish six years at one school before moving to middle school. But after middle school, classmates do not necessarily all stay together. Middle school boundaries and elementary boundaries are not the same map: Pacific Trails Middle and Carmel Valley Middle each have their own range, and children from the same elementary school may go to different middle schools. High school is another split: Torrey Pines is a boundary school assigned by address, and Canyon Crest Academy is a school of choice you apply to, so children who choose CCA and children who go straight to Torrey Pines part ways.

So will elementary classmates move up together? The answer is that most of them scatter, and only a few stay together all the way. That is not necessarily a bad thing. One parent we interviewed said that after her child changed schools in 4th grade, he got to know many classmates from Carmel Creek, and by middle school he knew far more people than if he had stayed at one elementary school. Changing schools takes adjustment, but each change is a chance to widen the circle of friends.

For families buying a house, the real task is to check the full three-level path at once. Take the address, check elementary, then middle, then high school, confirm all three names, and then decide whether that path is what you want. Do not decide on a good elementary school alone, and do not assume elementary classmates will be middle and high school classmates. The boundary maps will tell you the real answer.
