Torrey Pines or Canyon Crest Academy: Can You Choose?

Can you choose between Torrey Pines and Canyon Crest Academy? The answer is half and half. Torrey Pines is a boundary school assigned by address: live within its range and you can enroll any time of year, with no application needed. Canyon Crest Academy is a school of choice: it is also under San Dieguito Union High, but it is not assigned by address. Students go through an application process, the district publishes application times and admission methods, seats are limited, and admission is not guaranteed for everyone. So in the same district, one school you can attend by living there, and the other you have to apply to.

The difference also shows in how the two schools are set up. One middle school parent we interviewed said that around January and February each year, students can visit Torrey Pines and Canyon Crest Academy, and around April they decide which high school they want. In other words, choosing a high school is not settled the moment you buy a house; in 8th grade there is a formal window to look at both schools before deciding.

The course pace is different too. Canyon Crest Academy uses block schedule: the school year is divided into four terms, four classes a day in the first half of the year, then four different ones in the second half, eight different courses in a year. Torrey Pines runs about seven courses in a school year, a more traditional pace. Parents observe that CCA homework is genuinely heavier and the pace is fast, but the learning atmosphere is very good; Torrey Pines students develop more broadly, especially in sports. Neither school is absolutely better; different children fit different schools.

The admissions data also has highlights on both sides. In 2025 UC admissions, CCA's applicant and admission numbers were overall higher than Torrey Pines, with 81 admitted to UCSD against 40 for Torrey Pines, but that relates to the two schools' student counts and application strategies, and cannot be read directly as one school being stronger. What really matters is which pace fits your child's personality.

So when buying a house, there is no need to worry about CCA. Living in Carmel Valley, Torrey Pines is already a very good high school, and you can enroll any time; if your child wants to take on CCA, apply in 8th grade. Let your child look at the schools and decide; that is much better than deciding for them when you buy the house.
